World Mental Health Day: A Time to Act, a Time to Talk

October 10th marks World Mental Health Day, an annual global initiative dedicated to raising awareness of mental health issues and mobilising efforts in support of mental wellbeing. Coordinated by the World Federation for Mental Health and supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the day has been observed since 1992, with a different theme each year. It serves as a vital platform to shine a spotlight on mental health challenges, celebrate progress in mental healthcare, and advocate for greater support, breaking down the stigma that has long surrounded the issue.

At CitCom, we firmly believe that mental health in the workplace is as important as physical health, and we’re committed to fostering a supportive environment for our team. A key part of our approach is the support we give to our Mental Health First Aiders.

The Importance of Mental Health First Aiders in the Workplace

Mental health issues are incredibly common. A recent report from the Office for National Statistics revealed that nearly one in four adults in England will experience a mental health problem each year, and women are more likely than men to be affected. With so much of our lives spent at work, having a Mental Health First Aider on hand can make all the difference.

Mental Health First Aiders are not counsellors, but they are a vital bridge to professional help. They offer a safe, empathetic space for employees to talk openly about their well-being, helping to overcome the hesitation and stigma that often surround mental health challenges. This is especially important given that 70% of managers believe there are “structural” barriers to providing mental wellbeing support for their reports.

Become a Mental Health Champion

Fostering a mentally healthy workplace is a collective effort. Here’s how everyone can become a mental health champion at work and at home:

  • Educate Yourself: Take the time to understand common mental health issues and their signs. This knowledge enables you to better support friends, family, and colleagues by signposting them to the right resources, such as Mind and the Samaritans.
  • Be Approachable: Create an environment where people feel comfortable talking to you. Simply listening without judgment can be one of the most powerful things you can do.
  • Encourage Self-Care: Promote the importance of taking breaks, mindfulness, and stress management techniques. The cost of poor employee mental health to UK employers is an estimated £51 billion a year, with presenteeism being the largest contributor.

Prioritise Your Well-being: Remember, just as on an aeroplane, you must put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others.

The Crucial Role of Self-Care

Self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. We can only offer effective support to others when our own mental well-being is in a good place. Here are our top 10 tips for self-care at work:

  • Take regular breaks to prevent burnout.
  • Stay hydrated and eat well to fuel your mind and body.
  • Prioritise tasks to stay organised and reduce stress.
  • Set healthy boundaries and learn to say no when you need to.
  • Use your annual leave to recharge and disconnect.
  • Go for a walk to clear your head and get some fresh air.
  • Interact with colleagues to build relationships and a sense of community.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
  • Reflect and adjust your routine as needed.
  • Disconnect after work to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Having a Mental Health First Aider is a significant step, but it’s the combined effort of a supportive culture, a commitment to self-care, and a shared understanding of mental health that truly creates a healthy, productive, and happy workplace for all.
