Embracing Creativity and Exploring Careers
Anna’s Work Experience Journey at Citizen Communication
We’re excited to share a special blog post written by Anna, a student from Baxter College in Kidderminster who recently completed a work experience placement with us here at Citizen Communication. As part of our commitment to the local community, we regularly host students like Anna, giving them a chance to explore the world of digital agency. Anna’s story offers a unique perspective on how work experience can ignite passions and shape career aspirations.
My thoughts on my work experience and how it has helped me
When I was first told about having to complete work experience I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I had wasted my previous work experience by going to somewhere that didn’t really interest me so I knew that this time I had to pick something that would help me to pick my future career.
I have always had an interest in art and knew that I wanted to incorporate this into my future job. When I was searching for a placement, I emailed many different design companies but unfortunately did not get any replies. I then came across Citizen Communication and after looking through their website knew that I would really benefit from doing my work experience with them.
Originally when I first started I thought that the only thing I was interested in and that I would experience would be graphic design but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there are many different aspects within the company. I also thought that similar to my last work experience that it would be very observation based but that wasn’t the case at all as I got stuck into many different activities where I could not only learn about the software but create my own designs using the software as well.
What did I do and what did I like about my work experience?
On my first day I was welcomed by the team and given a tour of the building. This helped me to understand what went on at the company as I wasn’t only shown what went on digitally, I was also taken downstairs, where they print the designs.
I then worked with some of the team to learn about what their roles were within the company and what their day to day tasks looked like. I learnt all about the social media marketing side of the company and really enjoyed the task I was given to create an instagram post for the company explaining all about what services they offer which also helped me to get an idea of the variety of jobs within the company. I then worked on the graphic design side of the company, exploring lots of different softwares such as Adobe illustrator and photoshop. I really enjoyed doing this as it was very art based which is something I am very passionate about. I was given the opportunity to create different logos based on different brand briefs that I was given. I have included my favourite ones below 😀
I really enjoyed this as it allowed me to be creative and incorporate my own ideas into the designs. I then took the logos that I created and put them onto different packaging using photoshop. The last software that I explored was Adobe After Effects which is where I made my logos into mini adverts. This allowed me to explore the whole process of designing something for a brand.
I was also shown all of the different things that have been created by the company for different brands and all of the brands that have worked with the company in the past which was helpful as it allowed me to see the variety of services that are offered here at Citizen Communication.
Being in an office has also helped me to experience what it would be like in a working environment which I think has been a unique experience as you wouldn’t usually get to see what it would be like to work with a team and work in an office before actually entering into the working world.
Overall I really enjoyed my experience at Citizen Communication and I am very grateful to the team for welcoming me and showing me their day to day tasks to give me an idea of what I would possibly be doing if I was to choose this career path in the future.
This work experience has helped me to realise that I would definitely like to pursue something in this field of work. My favourite thing has been that I had the opportunity to use all of the software that would be used in the company by the team. I think that the best way to learn something and see if it would be something you would like to pursue in the future is to get stuck in and create something yourself rather than watching someone else do it and that is exactly what I was given the opportunity to do at Citizen Communication.
